Meet Jimmy

“Gregarious country crooner Jimmy Baldwin might have felt lonely without his band by his side, but if he did, he didn’t show it, owning the intimate little room with his burly presence. Bringing Johnny Cash to mind with his deep, resonant voice, he wielded his acoustic like a gunslinger and made some interesting cover choices with Billy Joel’s “The Downeaster Alexa” and Jessie Ware’s “Wildest Moments”, transforming the latter into a rootsy foot-stomper.” – Vivian Pencz, Georgia Straight, Oct 12, 2013

There aren’t many things in the world Jimmy Baldwin would rather do than grab one of his guitars and hit the stage in front of a bunch of smiling, singing faces. Good thing too as it seems that’s almost all he’s been doing the last few years. Whether as leader of his own Jimmy Baldwin Band; co-founding member of 10-piece Afro-beat funk juggernaut Camaro 67; hot Tele-picker with Warner country artists the Washboard Union; performer with top-tier event band Ten Souljers; or hired gun for various solo artists and one-off appearances, Jimmy is always playing.

As a guitarist, Jimmy has assimilated elements of genres including country, blues, jazz, funk, R&B, rock and various world music forms- specifically West African- into his own personal style. The influence of guitar legends like Jeff Beck, Danny Gatton and Mark Knopfler is evident in his playing. His vocal stylings, songwriting and performance skills have been shaped by a wide range of influences- from Waylon Jennings to Bruce Springsteen to Prince. As a guitarist and songwriter, Jimmy has created a funky, soulful hybrid of country-rock and R&B he calls ‘Country-Soul’. A multi-faceted artist, Jimmy is as comfortable delivering lonesome songs of heartbreak as he is funky, up-tempo rockers. The constant force that pervades all his work is his enthusiastic, joyful personality that shines through in his playing and singing. A charismatic performer, he lives to be on stage- alongside his bandmates or on his own- creating moments that break down barriers between audience and performer.

Solo career highlights include the release of his debut album “Changing Time” and two successful headlining performances at St James Hall in Vancouver in Feb & Nov 2013; Safefest Oct 2013; numerous performances in Vancouver, the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island; and a solo tour through BC/Alberta in late summer 2014. As a sideman with the Washboard Union he has spent the last two years touring across Canada and traveling as far as France. They recently completed a run of arena shows in western Canada opening for Dwight Yoakam.

Look for new Jimmy Baldwin music to be released in the coming year as well as lots of exciting performances with the various other projects he is currently involved in.

Jimmy also maintains a busy teaching schedule. He lives in east Vancouver.
